Four Elite Picks, Then A Lottery Habit

Christian McCaffrey and Ja'Marr Chase to open, then Brock Purdy and Patrick Mahomes as the quarterback pairing. That is the most balanced top four in the room. Travis Etienne Jr. and Jaylen Waddle add real production, and Colston Loveland is a reasonable bet at a position where reasonable bets are all that exist. McCaffrey turns thirty this season and has spent recent years fighting his own soft tissue, but when he plays he is still the best version of the job.

From the eighth round on, this becomes a stack of deep-league fliers. MarShawn Lloyd is a running back whose rookie year was almost entirely spent unavailable. Jordyn Tyson and Tyler Allgeier are depth-chart-dependent names. Alec Pierce is a deep threat whose weekly output looks like a heart monitor. Brian Thomas Jr. and Jordan Mason are the most defensible of the bunch. None of it is offensive on its own. Collectively it is five bench spots holding maybes when the top of the roster deserved insurance.

The bigger structural issue is quarterback. Purdy and Mahomes both start every week, which is correct, and there is no third arm anywhere on the sheet. Two quarterbacks in a format that starts two means the first bye week is a scramble on the wire against eleven teams with the same idea. Cairo Santos and the Packers defense close things out in the right rounds. James assembled a genuinely strong starting lineup and then spent the entire back half buying lottery tickets instead of a spare tire.
